biography
The professional freelance artist Volker Altenhof, born in 1950, studied from 1977 to 1982 “free art” and “experimental painting” at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design. His mentor was Professor W. Zimmermann.
During his studies he got scholarships in Greece, Estonia and Russia. In 1995, he received a travel grant from the federal state Schleswig-Holstein to go to Yemen. Today, Volker Altenhof lives and works in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Greece.
Since he became a member of the Federal Association of Visual Artists (the BBK), Volker Altenhof has been showing his works not only in numerous exhibitions in Germany, but also in several parts of Europe. Denmark, France, England, Finland or Greece – his lyrical, pictorial language and his good feel for colours is touching the people everywhere.
His works often relate to the experiences and impressions he gained from travelling and are created in thematic cycles and motives, such as “Letters to the Horizon”, “Away”, or “Navigation”. They go through an extensive process of changes, variants, experiments and possibilities before the actual artistic work is created.
As an artist who is completely dedicated to painting, Volker Altenhof has got a high technical solidity and aesthetic refinement. His play with colours reaches out to the colour itself: Volker Altenhof always works with the tempera technique of the old masters and he produces all the colours himself from coloured pigments.
